The cannon is of the October Revolution times (1917), it is just 3 meters deep. We will also have a look at an old place for beaching ships (berth), which is on the edge of a big canyon.

A vertical wall with several ledges, at the depth of 33 meters there is a beautiful grotto.

Ice Dive Safari

In the end of February - beginning of March, 2009 we plan a number of safaris on the Baikal ice and diving on the way, of course!

Safety of the trip of Lake Baikal by winter is being secured by The Baikal Ice Captains’ League in honour of A.Y.Burmeister. Ice captains are professionals who have a vast experience of ice travels. 
The members of the expedition will follow the ice captain’s car by the ice track – the safest route possible, which enables the expedition members to visit and take pictures of the most unique parts of the Baikal, which can be seen by a few travelers even in summer time.
The members of the expedition will see vast toros fields (toros fields form in the beginning of winter, when thin ice on the lake is being broken by strong winds, so by the time the ice grows thick enough to be broken by the wind there form territories of uneven ice, which is not smooth, but quite rough), areas of gololiadka (open ice, not covered with snow), snow dunes and also ice grottoes and caves with sparkling transparent icicles and water frozen on the rocks up to the height of 30 meters. 
In the northern part of Lake Baikal in Chivirkuysky Bay we might run across deep snow 50 cm thick. 
Ice captains will teach members of the expedition to pass ice cracks and other obstacles safely.
Day and night temperatures fluctuation during the journey might comprise 35 degrees (from 0 to -35 Celsius).


Preliminary safari programme:

Day 1: arrival to Irkutsk, transfer to Listvyanka, accommodation in Listvyanka
Day 2: 8:00 transfer to the settlement of Bolshiye Koty – 2 dives – overnight at a local tourist base
Day 3: trip to the village of Bolshoye Goloustnoye – 2 dives - overnight
Day 4: transfer to Olkhon island – accommodation at one of tourist bases
Day 5: diving near Cape Khoboy - overnight
Day 6: transfer to Ushkanyi Islands - making mines - diving - overnight
Day 7: return to Irkutsk – accommodation at a hotel
Day 8: departure

This safari is interesting, because it combines a trip over the Baikal ice with ice-diving. You will learn a lot about the great lake by winter: for example, what the ice looks “from inside” and you might have a chance to interact with Baikal seal – nerpa (near Usjkanyi islands).

Approximate cost of the trip for a group of 5 people and more: 5,000 rubles per person per day.

SAFARI TO CIRCUM-BAIKAL RAILWAY

Day 1: meeting transfer, accommodation aboard the ship, briefing, check-dive
Day 2: passage to “Koloklny” – 2 dives
Day 3: passage to the place where a ship of the XIXth century sank, diving there to see the wreck and also remnants of old trains that fell into the Baikal a century ago
Day 4: diving in the area of Port Baikal and Listvyanka.
